Derry Girls is a British-made sitcom created and written by Lisa McGee. Produced by Hat Trick Productions and starring a predominantly Irish cast, the programme is set in Derry, Northern Ireland, in the 1990s.[1] It premiered on 4 January 2018 on Channel 4[2] and was renewed for a second series after the airing of its pilot episode. Production of the second series began later that year on 8 October 2018, while the network is in "advanced talks" regarding renewal for a third series.[3][4] The second series began airing on 5 March 2019.[5]

The programme follows the lives of Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), her cousin Orla (Louisa Harland) and their friends Clare (Nicola Coughlan), Michelle (Jamie-Lee O'Donnell) and Michelle's English cousin James (Dylan Llewellyn), as they navigate their teens in Derry during the Troubles.
